2004 Wild geranium have a tap root. In even very young plants, the tap root may be more than 6 inches long. I have done most of my transplanting of wild geranium in the late spring, just as the leaves are starting to show. I try to pick very young plants and dig down as far as my hand shovel will reach. I go out after a rain or wet snow as the ground is very soft then and I can get my shovel down into the soil much further. The first year after transplanting, the wild geraniums do not show much growth but in subsequent years, the plants start to do better.
2008 This image is a wild geranium in late summer. It is one that I transplanted a few years ago that the deer, for some reason, like to nibble on.
2008 I would like to collect seed from different color wild geraniums.
