No experience.
In the 1990's we purchased aspen tree plants from the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) many times. We estimate that we planted about 100 aspen trees over 3 years. Although the little aspen sometimes survived for 2 years, they were all eventually eaten. In our experience, all herbivorous critters eat aspen, even pocket gophers.
The three native aspen we have left are being eaten by deer and elk. The bark on these remaining native aspen is quite scared from where the deer and elk gnaw on the trees. I have no plans to try propagating aspen again until I can find a way to discourage the critters from eating the plants.
